Also called dark comedy or black humor, black comedy is a comedy genre that presents serious or taboo topics such as rape, human trafficking, genocide, disease, depression, sexual or domestic violence, etc. in a humorous way, without trivializing the subject. The audience usually experiences amusement and discomfort at the same time. Black comedy is also a channel through which writers and comedians can touch upon a sensitive topic and not get reprimanded for it.

It’s believed black comedy first came to light during the 1950s. This type of comedy may not go down well with all humor fans since the fun element is often subdued. The dark topics are presented in the simplest format so that it’s easier to understand. Besides comedy shows and books, even movies and television shows could be based on or have dark comedy elements. For instance, Hail Caesar and Pulp Fiction are black comedy movies.
